Public Documents
Just because they have the right to charge, doesn't make it right.
"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance. And a people who mean to be their own governors, must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives.
A popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy, or perhaps both."
James Madison (1822)
Cover of the Oregon State Attorney General's Public Records and Meeting Manual

Here is how this works. If you know what type of document you are looking for, then select that topic. If you are looking for everything in a certain time span, you will have to review each topic. Hopefully, after not too much time, we will build a cross-indexing system so you can search by a word or topic. All documents are searchable within the document. So, if it is a bulk package (such as council packets) you can look for a word within the whole package. The tables and folders are a little generic, but the fewer graphics and such that we have, the faster it will load for those people with dial-up service. If there is information you need, do not run down to city hall. We may have it and haven't gotten it posted, or we may be able to get it from somewhere else. The city administrator now charges for every minute of research. They used to give people the first 1/2 hour free. But you won't be told this until you get your response back. They have the option of waiving fees for public interest, such as this site, but since we started asking questions about what we've been finding, Diane has argued against that. A group of people even offered to come in and scan them for the city and provide the city a digital copy for their records. But, the city administrator, again, argued against that. If you do have to go to the city to get documents, this is how it works. You fill out their form. Then at 5:00 on the sixth day after turning the form in, staff will advise the cost of the documents to you. Then, you pay them that cost. Or, if they come back with an amount that is too expensive, you can trim your request down. Then five days later you will receive your documents. The current cost is $10.00 for every 1/2 hour of research and 25 cents for each page. If you ask for it electronically, they will charge additional time for scanning and emailing. So, a five page document could cost you $20.00 if it takes 33 minutes to do all that. If you get or have information, and are willing to let us post it, let us know. Happy Researching!
